South African mother and two accomplices were sentenced to life imprisonment on Thursday for trafficking her then-6-year-old daughter, in a case that gained nationwide attention since the child went missing last year.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb976sdm00083b6mw9cmd1p8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kelly Smith, her boyfriend Jacquen Appollis and their friend Steveno Van Rhyn were convicted of kidnapping and trafficking the girl, Joshlin Smith, after she disappeared from a small town in the Western Cape.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb976sdm00093b6mgbgf966e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In a trial that shocked the country, a witness said Kelly Smith told her that she had sold her daughter to a sangoma, or traditional healer, for 20,000 rand ($1,100) and that the girl was desired for her \u201ceyes and skin.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb976sdm000a3b6m6hl66rrw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Joshlin Smith has still not been found despite an extensive police search.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb976sdm000b3b6mj1d8ajba@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Announcing their sentences on Thursday, high court judge Nathan Erasmus said the fact Kelly Smith, Appollis and Van Rhyn were drug users was no excuse.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb976sdm000c3b6mpuo7d47h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThere is nothing that I can find that is redeeming and deserving of a lesser sentence than the harshest I can impose,\u201d Erasmus said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb976sdm000d3b6mpp6trd58@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            For
